The modernization and renovation of Alice Deal Middle School created an increased capacity of 900 students. The school remained operational during the multi-year, phased construction process.
A new two-story wing includes a cafeteria, gym, multi-level arcade, and new electrical, mechanical and life safety systems. GHT provided MEP engineering design for a central mechanical system that uses a four pipe distribution scheme and allows individual temperature control by space and load conditions. Many of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) units are located in existing tunnels to support better utilization of the space available for classroom and offices. The new electrical and plumbing systems also used the tunnels to feed power to panels and equipment and distribute water and sprinkler piping throughout the existing building.
The project scope also included the design of new telecommunications and security systems – including metal detectors, security cameras, and motion sensors – and construction phase inspections.
