National Geographic Society Headquarters Energy Analysis and Building Model

The National Geographic Society (NGS) sought an ASHRAE Level I energy audit and building energy model to identify operational changes and system component changes that could reduce energy consumption at its 900,000 SF headquarters. GHT identified six Energy Efficiency Improvement Opportunities (EEIOs) for the campus, whose three main buildings were constructed in 1888, 1963, and 1984.

Our Operations Phase Services (OPS) team is currently conducting a follow-on ASHRAE Level II energy survey in support of NGS’ pursuit of an ENERGY STAR label and a certification level of Silver under the LEED for Existing Buildings Operations and Maintenance ™ rating system.

GHT is analyzing a variety of EEIOs for the campus, such as installing solar window films, heat recovery chillers, and photovoltaic (PV) arrays.  Of the preliminary practical (low-cost/no-cost) and capital investment EEIOs under investigation, NGS’ annual predicted savings could range from $5,000 - $290,000.
